Paper trading in India: test a strategy before real money

What paper trading is, what it can and cannot tell you, how to paper trade an algo strategy on live NSE data, and when to go live. Firefly's paper mode.

Paper trading is running a strategy on live market prices with simulated money. It is the step between reading a backtest and risking capital, and it answers a question the backtest cannot: how does this rule behave on data nobody has seen yet, today, with you watching?

What it tells you, and what it cannot

It tells you whether the signals arrive when the rule says they should, whether the stops and exits fire as designed, how often the system trades, and — the part people underestimate — how it feels to watch a rule be wrong for a week without touching it. It cannot tell you about fills: paper assumes you get the price on screen, and live markets charge the spread, slippage and impact. It also cannot tell you about the one thing that ends most systematic careers, which is abandoning the rules after a drawdown; only real money tests that.

How to paper trade an algo strategy in India

Pick the rules and the capital you would actually use. Run them on live end-of-day NSE data for at least six to twelve weeks — long enough to include a losing stretch. Keep a log of every signal with the price at the time and the price you would realistically have got. At the end, compare the paper equity curve against the backtest's expectation: a similar hit rate and drawdown shape is what you are looking for, not a similar return. If the paper period was all green, you have not tested it yet.

Signals as a free paper book

Signals publishes the strategies' verdicts every evening with the median stop and exit per stock. Tracking a few names from buy-zone entry to exit, at the published levels, is a paper trade with no setup at all — and because the pages are dated and rewritten after every close, the record is honest by construction.

Firefly's paper mode

Every Firefly account can start in paper mode: the same rules, the same allocation, live data, no orders. You see the daily statement exactly as you would live. Switching on is a call to confirm capital and risk limits; the broker API key is the only thing that changes. Nova (US) always starts in paper mode because the live history is still short, and we would rather you watch it than take our word. The full start checklist.

Questions people ask

Is paper trading free on Firefly?

Yes. Every account can start in paper mode against live prices; US (Nova) accounts always do. You switch to live when you have watched it long enough to trust it — or not.

How long should I paper trade?

Long enough to see a losing stretch. For a daily rule set that is usually six to twelve weeks; if the first month is all green, keep going until it is not.

Does paper trading need a broker account?

Not for Signals or for Firefly's paper mode. You will need an API-enabled broker account to go live, so opening one during the paper period saves time.

Why do paper results differ from live results?

Fills. Paper assumes you get the price on screen; live orders pay the spread and slippage, and large orders move the price. Expect live to be a little worse than paper and judge the gap.
