Best algo trading app & software in India: how to choose

Custody, published results with losing months, readable backtests, stops, billing, broker support and SEBI's framework. Where Firefly fits, and where not.

Every "best algo trading software in India" list is a ranking written by one of the entries. This page is a checklist instead. Put any platform — including ours — through it, and the ranking takes care of itself.

First, which kind do you need?

  • Strategy builders (no-code or code): you design the rules, the platform executes. Good if you have rules and time to maintain them.
  • Marketplaces: other people's strategies for a fee. SEBI's 2025 framework restricts individual-to-individual strategy sharing to family, so check the provider's registration.
  • Managed rule sets on your own account: the provider runs its strategies through your broker API; you keep custody. Firefly is this kind.

The checklist

Custody: is the money ever theirs?

It should never be. Orders on your account through an API key; withdrawals only by you.

Verified results, with the losing months

Third-party verification of a live account, or full trade logs you can reconcile, not a screenshot. If only the good months are shown, walk away.

Backtests you can read

Trade-by-trade, with costs stated, drawdowns shown, and a note on how many strategies were discarded.

A stop on every rule and a limit on the book

Ask what happens at a 10% portfolio drawdown. The answer should be specific.

Billing that aligns

Subscription is fine; profit-share is fine; brokerage markups and "guaranteed return" pricing are not.

Broker support and the SEBI framework

Which broker APIs; static IP handling; whether the provider is empanelled through your broker (why that matters).

A kill switch you control

Deleting the API key at your broker must stop everything, immediately.

Someone to call

A person who knows your account, not a ticket queue.

Where Firefly fits

Firefly is a managed rule set: about 1,200 strategies in seven families, capital allocated to the ones working, orders placed on your Angel One or Zerodha account. Backtests are published trade by trade with the bad months included; billing is monthly and only in net-profit months. Where it does not fit: if you want to write your own strategies, use a builder; if you have under a few lakh, watch Signals for free until the capital is there.

Claims to be suspicious of

"Consistent returns." "SEBI-approved" (SEBI does not approve algorithms). Any fixed annual percentage. "Limited spots." Testimonials with profit figures and no names. A ranking where the site's own product is number one — including, to be fair, this page's product section above, which is why the checklist comes first.

Questions people ask

Which is the best algo trading software in India?

There is no single answer; it depends on whether you want to write strategies (a builder like AlgoTest or Tradetron), copy someone's (a marketplace, now restricted by SEBI), or run a managed rule set on your own account (Firefly). Use the checklist on this page rather than a ranking.

Is free algo trading software safe?

Free builders are fine if you supply the strategy. Be careful with anything free that promises returns — the business model has to be somewhere, and it is usually in brokerage kickbacks or in selling your strategy data.

What should the platform never ask for?

Your login password, your bank details, or custody of funds. A trading-only API key on your own account is the only thing an automated platform needs.
