Firefly methodology: how the strategies, swarm and risk work

How Firefly's algo trading works end to end: 1,000+ rule-based strategies, swarm allocation, buy-zone thresholds, sizing, stops, drawdown limits, backtests.

Firefly is Fintrens' algo trading engine. It runs more than a thousand rule-based strategies at once, lets them compete, uses a swarm layer to decide which ones get capital, and places the resulting orders on your own broker account with a stop on every position. This page is the whole method in one place — the same method behind Signals, Terra, Nova and Meta.

1. Thousands of strategies, all running

Every strategy is a fixed rule: an entry condition, a target, a stop, and in most cases a trend-reversal exit that closes the position early if momentum turns. The rules fall into families — trend, momentum, mean reversion, breakout, volatility, quality and macro for equities; momentum, technical, on-chain, network growth and macro for crypto. Long-term rules work on one-to-five-year horizons, medium-term on three to twelve months. None is edited by hand once live: a strategy either fires on today's data or it does not. Each rule's family, entry type, stop and exit are published with its full trade history; the exact parameters are not, so the rules cannot be front-run.

2. Swarm allocation decides which rules get capital

Each strategy is treated as an agent in a swarm. Agents that have been right recently — on this instrument, in this regime — gain weight; agents that have been wrong lose it. The swarm also reads breadth and convergence: how many rules across unrelated families are pointing the same way on a name, and what the market did the last times that convergence appeared. Capital moves toward the rules that are working now and away from the ones that have gone quiet. No person chooses among them.

The verdict you see on Signals is the swarm's current vote. An instrument is in the buy zone when more than 62% of strategies with an active signal are bullish, in the avoid zone below 40%, and wait in between. The live products use the same thresholds.

3. Position sizing and stops

Size scales with how many strategies agree and down with the instrument's realised volatility: a lone signal gets a small position, a 78% consensus a larger one, and a coin moving 8% a day a fraction of what a Nifty stock gets. Every position carries the stop and take-profit of the rule that opened it, placed at the broker rather than held in Firefly's memory, so an outage does not leave a position unprotected. Option strategies run with defined risk; no naked short options into expiry without a hedge.

4. Limits on the whole book

On top of per-rule stops, the portfolio carries a drawdown limit you set on the onboarding call. If the book draws down past it, exposure is cut across the board and rules have to re-qualify before size returns. Sector and single-name caps keep a convergence of rules on one stock from becoming a concentration. These are the numbers we publish alongside results, not instead of them.

5. Execution on your account

Orders go through your broker's API using a trading-only key: it can place and cancel orders and read positions; it cannot withdraw. Under SEBI's 2025 framework the machine placing orders — Firefly's server — is whitelisted by static IP against your account. Funds and securities never leave your broker and demat; every order appears in your contract notes; revoking the key stops everything. Details: SEBI's rules · broker API guides.

6. How backtests are run

On daily closes — NSE from 2010, US from 2005, crypto from 2017 — before brokerage, taxes and slippage, with delisted names retained to avoid survivorship bias, and with in-sample and out-of-sample periods marked. Results are published trade by trade per family: entries, exits, stop hits, hit rate, maximum drawdown and time to recover, losing stretches included. They are hypothetical and labelled as such. How to read one.

7. When things update

Indian instruments after the NSE close; US after the New York close (about 02:30 IST); crypto hourly, with Signals pages refreshed daily. Mutual fund rankings refresh when the day's NAVs are published. Live product weights update at each close; Signals shows the same verdicts the products act on, with the day's date on every page.

8. What this is not

Not a prediction of prices. Not a promise of returns — we publish none. Not investment advice: Fintrens is not a SEBI-registered investment adviser or research analyst, and Firefly executes rules you choose to run on your own account. Not a black box: the families, stops, exits and histories are public, and the thresholds above are the ones in use. Judge it on Signals for as long as you like before any capital is involved.

Questions people ask

Does a human pick the trades?

No. Rules fire or they do not; the swarm layer re-weights them by recent performance; orders go to your broker with stops attached. People set the capital, the drawdown limit and which families run — on the onboarding call, in writing — and can stop everything by revoking the API key.

What does 'buy zone' mean exactly?

More than 62% of the strategies with an active signal on that instrument are bullish. Below 40% is the avoid zone; in between is wait. The same thresholds drive Signals and the live products.

Why are backtests shown before costs?

So the strategy logic can be judged on its own and compared across families. Brokerage, STT and slippage depend on your broker and size; live statements include them, and the start guide tells you how to estimate them for your account.

Is the strategy logic disclosed?

Each rule's family, entry type, stop and exit are published with its trade history, which makes the strategies white-box under SEBI's framework. The exact parameters are not published, to stop the rules being front-run.

Fintrens Technologies Pvt Ltd is not a SEBI-registered investment adviser or research analyst. This guide is general information, not advice; trading involves risk of loss.
