AI trading in India: what is real, what is a scam
AI trading is searched more than algo trading in India. What AI really does in trading, the signs of an AI trading scam, SEBI's rules, and where Firefly sits.

Searches for AI trading in India now outnumber searches for algo trading several times over. A lot of what ranks for the phrase is offshore forex and binary-option platforms, Telegram "AI signal" groups and apps promising monthly returns. This page is the honest version: what AI does in trading, what it does not, how to tell a product from a scam, and where Firefly sits.
What AI actually does in trading
Three things, well. Reads more than a person can — every price, every filing, every day. Keeps rules consistent — a model that re-weights strategies by recent performance does the same thing on a bad day as on a good one. Explains — a language model can tell you why your portfolio fell today in plain words, with the numbers. What it does not do is know the future. Markets are mostly noise; the best systems have an edge over many trades, not certainty about the next one.
Seven signs of an AI trading scam
- Your money goes to them, not to your own broker account. Everything legitimate in India trades on your account through an API key that cannot withdraw.
- A return figure — monthly, guaranteed, "consistent". SEBI bars registered entities from advertising returns; the unregistered ones do it freely.
- Urgency and referral bonuses. Real platforms do not need you to recruit.
- No losing trades shown. Every real record has red months.
- Forex, binary options or offshore "brokers". Retail forex and binary trading outside RBI-permitted pairs is illegal for Indian residents.
- Withdrawal friction. If getting money out needs a "tax payment" first, it is gone.
- No company, no registration, no address. Check the SEBI intermediary list and the MCA register.
The rules that apply
Software that places orders on your account works under SEBI's February 2025 algo framework: a SEBI-registered broker's API, a static IP for the machine placing orders, exchange order-rate thresholds, and registration of third-party algos through the broker. Anyone giving you personalised buy/sell advice for a fee needs an investment-adviser or research-analyst registration, AI or not. The framework explained.
Where Firefly sits
Firefly's trading is rule-based: 1,000+ fixed strategies in seven families, with a swarm layer that moves capital toward the rules working now. Orders go to your own broker account through a trading-only key; backtests are published trade by trade; the daily output is free on Signals. The AI part is the layer in development — Advisor explains your portfolio, Coach teaches technical analysis on real charts, Allocator compares how your capital is split — and none of it recommends what to buy. Fintrens is not a SEBI-registered adviser, and says so on every page. The global version of this guide: AI trading bots, what they can and cannot do.
Questions people ask
Is AI trading legal in India?
Trading on your own account with software — AI-assisted or rule-based — through a SEBI-registered broker's API is legal, within SEBI's 2025 algo framework. Handing money to an 'AI trading company' that pools it and promises returns is not a regulated product and is where the fraud cases come from.
Can AI predict the stock market?
No system predicts prices reliably, AI included. What AI does well is read a lot of data quickly, keep rules consistent, and explain what it sees. Any product whose pitch is prediction with a return figure is selling you the past.
What AI does Firefly use?
Firefly's trading is rule-based: 1,000+ fixed strategies with a performance-weighted allocation layer. The AI products in development — Advisor, Coach and Allocator — use language models to explain a portfolio, teach, and compare allocations. They do not place trades.
How do I check an AI trading app before paying?
Ask where your money sits (your own broker account, or theirs?), whether the API key can withdraw, whether they publish every trade including losses, who is SEBI-registered for what, and how they are billed. A no on the first two ends the conversation.
Fintrens Technologies Pvt Ltd is not a SEBI-registered investment adviser or research analyst. This guide is general information, not advice; trading involves risk of loss.
