How it works

What is algorithmic trading?

Trading by pre-defined rules that a program executes without discretion. It removes emotion from entries and exits and applies the same rule every time.

How does Firefly decide what to trade?

Over a thousand rule-based strategies in seven families read every tracked instrument at each close. Each says buy, wait or avoid; when enough agree, the instrument enters the buy zone and capital is allocated to the rules with the strongest recent hit rate.

How many trades a month?

It depends on capital, the strategy families enabled and market conditions. A typical Terra account sees around 250–300 orders a month; a premium account running ₹1 crore across the full strategy set can reach 1,500 in an active month. Every order appears in your broker statement.

Do I need trading skills?

No. You need capital, a broker with an API, and the patience to judge results over months rather than days.

Money and risk

Will I face losses?

Yes. Some trades and some months lose. Every rule has a stop, the portfolio has a drawdown limit, and the published backtests show the losing periods.

Can I get rich quickly?

No, and we will not tell you otherwise. Firefly is a disciplined way to run rules on your capital; it is not a scheme.

What drawdown should I expect?

It depends on the families you enable and the limit you set. The historical figures, per family, are on the backtest page with their method.

What is the minimum capital?

About ₹10 lakh for Terra so the strategies can diversify. Less is possible with fewer families running.

What is pledging?

Using shares you already hold as collateral for margin, without selling them. Terra runs on pledged margin so you do not need fresh capital.

Brokers and keys

Which broker should I use?

Any supported one; Angel One has the smoothest API onboarding and we can refer you. Zerodha and IIFL also work.

What is an API key?

A credential that lets Firefly place orders on your account without knowing your password. It cannot withdraw money.

Can Firefly move money to another bank account?

No. Withdrawals only go from your broker to your registered bank account, initiated by you.

Can I place my own trades on the same account?

You can, but manual positions compete with the strategies for margin. Use a separate account for discretionary trades.

How do I stop Firefly?

Revoke the key at the broker, or tell us. There is no lock-in.

Billing

How is Firefly billed?

Monthly, and only in months your account made a net profit after costs. A losing month is not billed.

Is there a lock-in?

No. Pause or stop any time without penalty.

Does Firefly add brokerage?

No. Brokerage, STT and exchange charges are whatever you have arranged with your own broker; Firefly adds nothing on top and takes nothing from the broker.

What if I miss a payment?

We send reminders; if dues stay unpaid the service is paused until cleared.

Getting started

Is algo trading legal in India?

Yes. Retail algo trading runs through a SEBI-registered broker's API on your own account, within SEBI's February 2025 framework: a static IP for the machine placing orders, exchange order-rate thresholds, and registration of third-party algos through the broker. Firefly works inside those rules.

Is algo trading profitable?

Some rule sets are profitable over some periods; none in every period, and we do not publish return figures. Read the backtests with their losing months and decide whether you could have sat through the drawdowns. Anyone promising consistent profits is describing the past, or lying.

Can I do algo trading without coding?

Yes. Firefly runs the strategies; you choose capital, risk limits and families on a call and read a monthly statement. Understanding what a rule does and where its stop is matters more than writing it.

Is algo trading suitable for beginners?

For investing with discipline, yes — the rules do the watching. For learning to trade, start with Signals (free) and the guides, and with Firefly Coach when it launches. Do not start with money you cannot afford to lose.

Which is the best broker for algo trading in India?

The one you already have, if it offers an API: Angel One (SmartAPI) is the smoothest to set up, Zerodha's Kite Connect Personal plan is free. No account yet? Open an Angel One account through fintrens.com/join — we are an Angel One referral partner and receive a fee from them; you pay nothing extra.

Is there a free algo trading option?

Signals is free: the strategies' daily verdicts on 100+ stocks, mutual funds and coins. Running them on your account (Terra) is billed monthly, only in months with a net profit.

Can I paper trade first?

Yes. Every account can start in paper mode against live data and switch to live when you have watched it for a while. US (Nova) accounts always start in paper mode.

Tax, rules and risk

How are algo trading profits taxed in India?

The same as manual trading: intraday equity is speculative business income, F&O is non-speculative business income, delivery gains are capital gains (STCG/LTCG). Crypto gains are taxed at a flat 30% with 1% TDS and no loss set-off. Firefly's monthly report separates them; a CA should file them.

Can I lose more than I invest?

In delivery equity, no. In F&O and leveraged positions a fast gap can exceed a stop, which is why Firefly limits position size by volatility, keeps a drawdown limit on the whole book and never runs naked short options into expiry without a defined-risk hedge.

What happens if Firefly's servers go down?

Open positions sit at your broker with their stops attached, not in our memory. Nothing new is placed until we are back; you can close anything yourself from your broker app at any time.

What does SEBI's static IP rule mean for me?

The machine placing orders must have a fixed IP whitelisted with your broker. That machine is Firefly's server, so we give you the IP during onboarding and you enter it once.

Does Firefly trade on weekends or holidays?

Indian and US strategies only when their exchanges are open. Crypto strategies run 24×7, including weekends, with the smallest default position sizes.

AI, crypto and NRIs

Is Firefly an AI trading bot?

Firefly is a rule-based engine with a performance-weighted allocation layer; it does not predict prices with a language model. The AI products in development — Advisor, Coach and Allocator — explain, teach and analyse on top of it; they do not place trades.

Is a crypto trading bot legal in India?

Trading crypto on your own exchange account is legal and unregulated; gains are taxed at 30% with 1% TDS. Firefly Meta trades on Binance through an API key with withdrawals disabled, for Indian residents, with small capital while drawdown handling is refined.

Can NRIs use Firefly?

Yes. Terra on an NRI (NRE/NRO) trading account at a supported broker, within RBI and exchange limits for derivatives; Nova on US stocks via Alpaca or Interactive Brokers opened directly. Crypto is not offered to UAE residents pending VARA licensing.

Does Firefly give investment advice?

No. Fintrens Technologies is not a SEBI-registered investment adviser or research analyst. Firefly executes rules you choose to run on your own account; Signals and the AI products explain and analyse. Consult a SEBI-registered adviser for advice.
