Case study: a Surat investor's second opinion from Signals
A self-directed investor in Surat checks every buy against Firefly Signals, sits out when the strategies say avoid, and took the emotion out of his decisions.
An anonymised account of a real Signals user who agreed to share his process. No holdings, returns or P&L are shown.
Who
A business owner in Surat in his forties who has managed his own equity portfolio for over a decade and has no interest in handing it to anyone — not a PMS, not an algo, not an adviser. He reads results, follows a few analysts, and buys in blocks a few times a year.
The problem he wanted to solve
His own words: his analysis was usually fine and his timing was usually emotional. He bought after a run because the story felt confirmed, added to losers because selling felt like admitting a mistake, and stayed fully invested through periods when he had privately decided the market was expensive. He wanted a check that was not another opinion from another person — he had plenty of those — but something mechanical and independent of his mood.
What he does now
Before any buy, he opens the stock on Firefly Signals and reads two things: the verdict — buy zone, wait or avoid — and the family breakdown underneath it, which shows how many of the engine's strategies, across trend, mean-reversion, breakout and volatility families, currently agree. He treats that breakdown as the view of a large committee of rule-followers with no stake in his story. If his view and the committee's agree, he proceeds at his planned size. If they disagree, he does not reverse his view; he waits for the next close, or buys a smaller first tranche and revisits.
The second habit is the one he values more. When the India page shows most strategies in avoid or wait across the board, he stops adding, and in two such stretches he raised cash and sat out. He describes this as the first time he has ever stayed out of the market because of a rule rather than a feeling, and the first time he did not regret it either way, because the decision was not his to second-guess.
Where it did not help
Signals is end-of-day and rule-based; it will be late at turning points and wrong on individual names. He has bought stocks the strategies avoided that went on to do well, and he knows the engine would have had him wait on some of his better entries. He accepts that because the goal was never to beat the engine; it was to stop the emotional trades, and those have fallen away.
What changed
Fewer trades, each one deliberate. A written reason for every buy that includes what the strategies said at the time, so he can review his own judgement later. Cash held when the rules said hold cash. He has not automated anything and has no plan to; he uses Terra's engine the way he would use a second doctor: to confirm, to question, and sometimes to tell him to do nothing.
If you manage your own money
Signals is free and needs no account. The methodology page explains how the verdicts and family breakdown are built, and what is backtesting explains how to read the published evidence. Questions people ask
Is Signals a recommendation to buy or sell?
No. Signals reports what Firefly's rule-based strategies see for each stock — how many are in a buy zone, waiting or avoiding — so you can compare your own view with a large set of mechanical ones. Fintrens is not a SEBI-registered adviser and Signals is not personalised advice.
Does he follow Signals blindly?
No, and that is the point of the case. He forms his own view first, then checks it. When Signals disagrees he does not reverse his view; he waits, or sizes smaller, and revisits after the next close.
Is Signals free?
Yes. It is published after every market close for 100+ Indian stocks, US stocks and crypto, and is in beta.
Fintrens Technologies Pvt Ltd is not a SEBI-registered investment adviser or research analyst. This guide is general information, not advice; trading involves risk of loss.
